What exactly is a scrambler in 2026? Once road bikes modified for Sunday scrambles, today the term has shifted — overlapping adventure and trail/dual sport bikes. Sitting in the countryside on the Triumph 400 Scrambler XC, we explore the history, style, and intent of scramblers, with laughs, nostalgia, and honest opinion.
Once upon a time, scramblers were essentially road motorbikes, modified to go off road around a scramble track in a farmers field on a Sunday afternoon – what we now call motocross. The genre ‘Trail Bike’ seems to have disappeared in the UK (what Americans know as Dual Sport) and now of course, everyone is mad about Adventure Bikes.
Today, “scrambler” seems to mean something very different.
Sitting in the countryside with the Triumph 400 Scrambler XC, we have a light-hearted and honest chat about how the identity of scramblers has changed over the years, and how they now overlap (and maybe clash) with adventure bikes and trail bikes.
This isn’t a spec review.
It’s a conversation about feel, intent, style, and what motorcycles are meant to do, with a few laughs, a bit of nostalgia, and plenty for motorcycle enthusiasts to argue about in the comments.
