The new Triumph Scrambler 400 XC does something almost no modern motorcycle dares to do, it taps into genuine 1970s trail bike nostalgia. Riding it instantly reminded us of bikes like the Yamaha XT500 which was simple, honest, slightly rough around the edges, and full of character.

But nostalgia alone is not enough, so in this review we properly put the Scrambler 400 XC under the microscope.

We talk about the things Triumph has got very right, the looks, the stance, the surprisingly beautiful 400cc engine, how much character it really has, and why it feels different to almost every other new bike on sale today.

We also get brutally honest about the areas that matter, the suspension setup, handling on the road, lane filtering and town riding, tyre choice, off-road capability, and where the bike could be improved. No hype, no brand bias, just how it actually feels to live with and ride.

Is this the closest thing to a modern 70s trail bike you can buy new, or is it trying too hard to be something it is not?
