The Suzuki V-Strom 1050 DE is a motorcycle with a strong reputation and a loyal following, so we went into this test ride with an open mind and spent real time analysing what it’s like to live with.
There’s no denying its strengths. It’s fast, well-equipped, and clearly engineered to be capable across a wide range of riding. On paper, it promises a lot, especially to riders drawn to the adventure-bike idea.
But out on the road, and in the real world, it left us struggling to connect with it.
We found the bike heavy and cumbersome at low speeds, and awkward in situations that demand balance and finesse. In fact, getting it stuck while simply trying to turn around on a road verge said more than any spec sheet ever could; it highlighted just how ungainly and unforgiving the bike can feel in everyday riding.
The V-twin engine is undoubtedly powerful, but for us it lacked low-rpm grunt where it matters most, while becoming noticeably vibey higher up the rev range. That combination made it feel less relaxed and less usable than we’d hoped, particularly outside of fast, open roads.
This isn’t a takedown, and it certainly isn’t a judgement on V-Strom owners. Many riders clearly love these bikes, and for the right person, in the right context, it may make complete sense.
But for us, after a thorough and honest test ride, the V-Strom 1050 DE felt like a bike trying to be everything, and in doing so, not quite fitting comfortably into most situations we actually ride in.
