Canada is preparing to hit certain American-made motorcycles with a massive 50% tariff — but the bigger story is WHY motorcycles keep getting dragged into international trade fights in the first place.
In this video, we break down what Canada’s retaliatory tariffs actually mean for Harley-Davidson, Indian Motorcycle, Canadian riders, American factories, dealers, suppliers, and the wider motorcycle industry.
This isn’t just about what a motorcycle might cost in Canada. If Canadian dealers order fewer American-built bikes, that pressure can work its way backward through factories, suppliers, shipping, production volume, and eventually decisions about where motorcycles are built.
And we’ve seen this happen before.
When European retaliatory tariffs hit Harley-Davidson in 2018, Harley initially absorbed millions of dollars in added costs before eventually changing where some motorcycles destined for Europe were produced.
The timing today is especially interesting. Harley-Davidson is trying to rebuild motorcycle sales and dealer profitability after a difficult 2025, Indian Motorcycle is beginning a new chapter as an independent company, and riders are already dealing with high motorcycle prices, financing costs, and affordability concerns.
