In my review of the new 2026 Nightster (The “Hype Meets Reality” video), I mentioned that it felt like a high-strung metric bike in a Harley-Davidson suit. Today, we’re moving past “feelings” and looking at the hard data.

Most riders assume that a modern 6-speed transmission is a guaranteed upgrade over an “old” 5-speed Evolution engine. But when you break down the overall gear ratios, a different story emerges. Whether you’re riding an XL Sportster, an Iron 883, or the new Revolution Max Nightster and Sportster S, your gearing dictates your bike’s personality.
